报告摘要(Abstract):

By the year 2020, there will be 50 billion wireless sensor nodes, ‘smart dust’ or ‘motes’ around us. The presence of billions of such small pervasive computing things/devices around us provide intelligence integrated into the real world smart environment enable us to address crucial problems ranging from homeland security, environmental monitoring, and energy efficiency to name a few. Beyond just smart phones and tablets, the number of smart things that connect to the Internet will only continue to scale as the growing number of connected gizmos and appliances are coded and catalogued to send messages and data that would be web-accessible.

To achieve this vision of the smart environment with pervasive computing, also known as ubiquitous computing, many such miniaturized computing devices will be integrated in everyday objects and activities to enable better human-computer interaction. The major hindrances of the “deploy-and-forget” nature of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), an example, are the their limited energy capacity and the unpredictability in the lifetime performance of the battery. To overcome these problems, energy harvesting (EH)/scavenging, which harvests/scavenges energy from a variety of ambient energy sources and converts it into electrical energy to recharge the batteries, has emerged as a promising technology.

In this talk, the miniaturized autonomous and self-sustainable wireless sensor network system operating in smart environments will be introduced. Topics covered in this presentation talk will include energy harvesting WSN (EH-WSN) system, with focus on power management, and specific application development of such optimized EH-WSN.

报告人简介(Short Biography):

Yen Kheng Tan (S’02–GS’06–M’11–SM’13) received the Ph.D degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2011.

He is presently a group leader at the Energy Research Institute @ Nanyang Technological University (ERI@N) and was a visiting scientist at the Institute of Automotive Technology of Technische Universität München (TUM), Germany. Some key research interests include smart energy harvesting building and human sensors and next generation power electronics.

Yen Kheng has published more than 35 papers in refereed journals and international conferences as well as 7 book chapters and 4 provisional patents/technology disclosure applications. He is a Senior Member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and serves as secretary, treasurer and committee member of IEEE Sensors Council and IEEE PELS/IAS Singapore chapters respectively. Yen Kheng is also an Editorial Board member of InTech Scientific and Springer and book editor of more than 6 books published in Taylor & Francis, John Wiley, InTech & Sciyo.
