Abstract

I will report on our group’s research of a hybrid platform combining van der Waals materials (e.g. graphene) with surface plasmon resonance. I will show that the combination opens up unexpected and exciting possibilities including bio-sensing, the manipulation of individual bio-molecules, and other biomedical applications.

A brief introduction of each of the two components will be presented with emphasis on physics and materials science aspects. In addition, a review of surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), the main technique we employ for bio-sensing will be presented. The introduction will be followed by a list of characteristics unique to the hybrid platform. Leveraging these unique characteristics, the hybrid platform has been employed for detecting important proteins at single molecule sensitivity, for manipulating bio-molecules/proteins via electrostatic bias and plasmonic tweezers, for early detection of cancer, and potentially for in vivo applications.

Ya-Hong Xie obtained the B.Sc. degree in physics from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, in 1981, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), Los Angeles, in 1983 and 1986, respectively.

He was a member of the technical staff in the Physical Sciences and Engineering Research Division, Bell Laboratories from 1986 till 1999. In 1999, he joined the faculty of UCLA as a Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He has authored and coauthored over 150 technical articles and is the holder of 38 US patents as well as a number of patents of other countries including Korea, Japan and China. His current research interests include bio-sensing, the physical properties and devices of graphene, and lattice mismatched heterostructures including group III nitrides and strained silicon.

Dr. Xie is a fellow of IEEE and a member of the American Physical Society. He is the winner of 2012 Research Award of Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He is selected to be an awardee of the Seagull Plan of Zhejing Province in 2015. He holds and held guest professor positions of Peking University (China), Xi’an Jiao Tong University (China), National Cheng Kung University (Taiwan), and Nanjing University (China). He has been a visiting scientist of IHP, the Leibniz Association Germany Institut für Innovative Mikroelektronik since 2010.
