Title: Smart Antennas and Microwave Circuits for Advanced Wireless Systems

Abstract: This talk consists of three parts: First, an introduction to the University of Kent, UK, will be provided.  This is followed by an overview of research topics in Antennas and RF/Microwave/MM-Wave Research Team at the University of Kent. Then, Prof. Gao will give some recent examples of antennas and microwave circuits developed at his research team. These examples include smart antennas for Ka-band Satellite Communications on the Move, low-cost small smart antennas for wireless communications, phased arrays for synthetic aperture radars, broadband active integrated arrays, compact multi-band array antennas for Global Navigation Satellite System Remote Sensing, UWB antennas for through-wall imaging radars, LINC power amplifiers, high-efficiency RF/microwave power amplifiers, etc. The talk is ended with a conclusion.

Biography: 高式昌 (Steven Gao), 男, 工学博士,安徽人。英国肯特大学 微波工程专业 教授 (Professor, University of Kent, UK)。主要研究领域包括：卫星通信、移动通信中的天线技术(智能天线，相控阵，卫星天线,宽带和多频段天线,天线阵,天线小型化),微波、毫米波电路(微波功率放大器、滤波器), 射频系统，卫星移动通信, 超宽带雷达成像系统等研究等。他出版两本书(<<Space Antenna Handbook>>, Wiley, UK, May 2012; <<Circularly Polarized Antennas>>,IEEE-Wiley, USA, Feb. 2014)，并在国际学术期刊(IEEE Transactions, IEEE Letters, IET等) 和国际会议上发表论文180余篇。1994年起他在中国电波传播研究所(电子部22所)工作，后来先后在新加坡国立大学、英国伯明翰大学做博士后研究员。2002至2007年在英国诺森比亚大学做副教授。其间于2003年在瑞士苏黎世联邦理工学院(ETHZ)做访问科学家、2005年在美国加利福尼亚大学(UCSB)微波实验室做访问教授。2007至2012年在英国萨里卫星中心 (Surrey Space Centre)任副教授和 卫星天线与微波技术研究室负责人。他曾在日本千叶大学、意大利卡拉布瑞尔大学等做短期访问。2013年至今任英国肯特大学 教授。他曾获国际无线电联盟青年科学家奖(2002年),英国努菲而德优秀青年教师奖(2003年),英国高等教育局的杰出研究员奖(2005年)等。他分别于2005、2013年两次获得日本科学促进会的研究员奖。作为负责人承担和完成了多项英国政府、欧盟、欧洲工业界的研究项目。他参与多个国际学术会议，包括在2013年英国拉夫堡举行的国际天线和电波传播会议(LAPC)任大会主席、在2012年波兰举行的国际通信系统和无线网络会议任 “卫星和移动通信天线技术”的专题主席等。他担任美国Radio Science (无线电科学)的副主编, 并任多个国际学术期刊的编委(International Journal of Space Science and Engineering; IET Circuits, Devices and Systems, etc)。
