ZJU ISEE takes the lead to set up ITU-T international standards

Date:2021-05-18

The plenary session of International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector Study Group 16 (ITU-T SG 16) was sucessfully held online from April 19th to 30th. During the meeting, Zhejiang University took the lead, partnered with China Telecom and Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute of Republic of Korea , to propose a new standardization project titled Requirements and Framework for Feature-based Distributed Intelligent Systems. Through deliberate discussion and consideration, the representatives agreed to start the new work item and appointed Prof. YU Lu and doctorate candidate ZHANG Yuan from the Zhejiang University College of Information Science and Electronic Engineering as the editors. ZHANG was also appointed as the Co-chair of the Working Party 3, Media Coding and Immersive Enviroments, ITU-T SG16.

With the development of machine learning and deep learning, machine intelligence-oriented data processing will replace the traditional algorithms and machine intelligence-oriented feature data will replace raw data to realize distributed intelligent computing and connectivity. Standardization of AI feature data and architecture for intelligent application system will empower data which serves all elements of machine vision scenarios, the whole value chain, and the entire industrial chain.

International Telecommunication Union (ITU), founded in 1865, is one of the oldest international organizations in the United Nations and the specialized agency for information and communication technologies. ITU allocates global radio spectrum and satellite orbits, develops the technical standards that ensure networks and technologies seamlessly interconnect, and strives to improve access to information and communication technologies to underserved communities worldwide. It is the first time that Zhejiang University’s proposal for a new international standards work item has been approved by ITU-T. YU’s team will continue to work with their partners to transfer their research results ondigital intelligent new meida to international standards and promote their industrial application.
