Based on theory of electromagnetic field and optics, this course systematically introduces the propagation characteristics of dielectric optical waveguide and the principles of the basic optical waveguide device unit. The major content includes: theory of electromagnetic field； the propagation characteristics of planar dielectric waveguide； the analysis method of gradient refractive index and complex refractive index waveguide； the analysis method of three dimensional waveguide；the characteristics of optic fiber； optical waveguide mode-coupling theory； photonic crystal/nonlinear dielectric waveguide/nano-waveguide; principle and application of the basic optical waveguide device(splitter, modulator, optical switch, filter, micro rings), some development of integrated optic waveguide device and so on.
